Grammar Point

The です (Desu) Copula

In Japanese, です is used at the end of a sentence to indicate politeness. It's similar to the English verb "to be" but functions differently grammatically.

Structure:

[Noun] + です

Example:

私の名前は悟空です。

(Watashi no namae wa Goku desu.)

Cultural Note

Japanese Greetings

こんにちは (Konnichiwa) is a standard daytime greeting used from about 10 AM until sunset. In the morning, you would say おはようございます (Ohayou gozaimasu) and in the evening こんばんは (Konbanwa).

Anime Insight:

Goku often uses casual speech, but in this lesson we're teaching polite forms first, which are more versatile for learners.

How do you say "Believe it!" in Japanese? Naruto says it all the time but I'm not sure about the exact pronunciation...

Just completed the Keigo lesson with Levi. It was tough but so rewarding! Anyone else working on honorifics?
